Networking

As an introvert leader I would often avoid networking events, even though I knew that attending them would be in my best professional interest. I felt like I had to pretend to be someone outgoing and confident, which was counter to my internal experience in social situations, where I often felt like an outsider and imposter.

Fortunately, I was able to shift my mindset about the “Why” of networking from a fixed mindset (I’m an imposter) to a growth mindset (networking creates opportunity for connection and impact, which are two of my core leadership values). I also found a mantra that has helped me to unlock the powerful leadership pillar of networking. When I feel the anxiety about networking arising, I just remind myself that “My network is my net worth.” The mantra also happens to be Porter Gale’s 2014 book on the subject, although I came across it through a different avenue!

I now see networking not as another boozy schmoozy social event but as a way to build meaningful connections and create an impact in the world, in my own way and on my terms. And with the power of technologies such as social media and video conferencing, networking has moved well beyond the confines of in-person gatherings so there are many ways to create and maintain connection.

In addition to Porter’s book, I thought this HBR article on networking was a helpful reminder of why networking is such an important aspect of impactful leadership:
